Abstract:
In June 1997 a radio receiver of the Seismic Alert System (SAS) of Mexico City was installed in the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana campus Iztapalapa. The population reached by the early warning signal is about 15,000 students with a near-by population of 25,000. After installation an internal program for hazard mitigation has been applied in the campus.

To date 7 early warning signals have been received. During these early warnings that occurred in working hours, evacuation has been carried out in an average time of 30 to 60 seconds. Surveys show that since the SAS installation the attitude of the population towards earthquake prevention has changed. To date 90 percent of the population responds to the early warning signal.
